RANGELY | With spring break coming to an end 13 Rangely track and field athletes decided to spend part of their last free weekend attending the Hotchkiss Invitational on Saturday, March 23. When they arrived at the meet and found snow covering the infield and surrounding area, they were not sure if they needed to wear their running shoes or muck boots. After setting up camp the athletes got into competition mode and didn’t let the snow get them down as they all competed well. It was helpful that the weather decided to cooperate, and not snow or rain during the meet, it even got warm for a few moments.

The team brought home three first place finishes: seniors Riley Boydstun and Marshall Webber, and junior Hannah Wilkie. Boydstun took first in the discus with a throw of 117 feet, 9 inches, then took 10th in the shot with a 35-4. Webber had a close finish in the 110 high hurdles with a new season best of 18.10 seconds. He also ran the 200-meter dash for a time of 26.60. Wilkie, running the mile for her second time in her career, was able to pull off a new season best of 5:29.94.

The other 10 athletes found themselves placing or getting new season bests in their events or trying new events. For throwers, senior Breanna Davis threw the shot for 29-11.75, placing fourth, then threw the discus for 75-1. Elena Forbes threw the discus for 74-1 and the shot for 24-0. Freshman Brooke Filfred had a discus throw of 52-5 and threw the shot for 23-8. Freshman Brent Cantrell earned a season best in the discus with a throw of 42-3 and then threw the shot for 18-10.75.

For the runners and jumpers, the team had Mary Scoggins placing third in the mile with 6:04.87. She also placed fourth in the long jump with 14-6.5. Timothy Scoggins placed sixth in the high jump with a jump of 4-2, he had a season best in the long jump with a 15-7.5. He also ran the 200-meter dash in 29.69. Freshman Chloe Goshe ran the 100 hurdles for the first time this year, placing 15th overall with a time of 19.38. She also competed in the long jump for a distance of 12-6.75 which was a 12th place. Chloe Filfred got two new season bests in the 800-meter and 1,600-meter. Her time in the 800 was a 3:09.28 and a 6:57.76 for the 1,600. Anna Forbes—usually a thrower—is finding herself running this year as she is recovering from an injury. She ran the 100-meter dash in 17.07. Colton Noel competed in the long jump, 1,600 run and the 200 dash; he had a jump of 13-9.5, a 5:53.33 in the 1,600 and a 31.21 in the 200 dash.

The girls put together a 4×400 relay team made up of Mary Scoggins, Goshe, Filfred and Wilkie. They placed eighth overall with a time of 4:48.80.

The Panthers will be going to Meeker this weekend as well as Cedaredge. It will be a challenging weekend as they push themselves to compete in back to back meets.
