RANGELY | As spring is here so are spring sports, which mean the athletes are practicing in the sun, wind, rain and snow—spring in Colorado. The lady Panthers soccer team this year includes seniors Marlena Miller, Skylar Thacker, Alanna Wiley and Paityn Myers; juniors Andrea Knight, Ashlynn Heck, Zoe Sheppard, Susie Gillard and Audrye Patch; sophomores Kacie Lapp and Megan Ward; and freshmen Norrah Patch, Adelynn Halcomb, Aspen Low, Autumn Curdy, Shauna Lapp and Jenny Gillard. It is a young team but the girls have been working hard.
This past week the team opened their season on Saturday, April 6 playing Vail Christian in Edwards.
“The girls were excited and nervous at the same time since most of them have never played soccer. The girls have been working hard on learning the different positions. The importance in knowing the different positions is because as with any sport, athletes may have to go in at any position, whether it is due to injury, sickness, or being gone with other school activities,” said head coach Patsy Wanstedt.
The girls held Vail Mountain to two goals in the second half and had some shots on Vail Christian’s goal from several players. Senior Skylar Thacker had two shots on goal with one going in, freshman Aspen Low had one, and freshman Adelynn Halcomb had a shot on goal with one assist. Sophomore goalie Kacie Lapp had six saves and freshman goalie Adelynn Holcomb had two saves.
“Everyone played hard and never gave up. The team would like to thank all the parents, siblings and grandparents who traveled to cheer them on. The girls are determined to work even harder this next week to get a win,” Wanstedt said.
On Tuesday, April 9 the Panthers had a home opener game against Colorado Rocky Mountain School.
