Three games this past week and the Cowboy baseball record has improved from 2-9 to 4-10. In Thursday’s win over the Coal Ridge Titans the Cowboys consistently scored throughout the game closing out the final score 8-6. On the mound was senior Luis Villalpando who threw 93 pitches, striking out two, and sophomore Liam Deming, who rounded out the game throwing 33 pitches and striking out one. Cole Rogers led the team in scoring, making it around the bases to score twice.
The second win in a row, bringing some positive energy to the team, was a huge win over Ignacio, 20-3 in Montrose, Colorado.
“It’s a mental approach that has been positive,” commented head coach Donald Blazon. “The boys understand how important it is to believe in themselves and each other.”
Josh Murphy pitched the entire four inning game that was called early due to the overwhelming victory over the Bobcats. Offensively scoring was led by Murphy with Rogers, Villalpando, Hanks, Colton Wille, Braydon Garcia, CJ Wagnild, Tristan Wille, and Ryan Phelan all contributing the the 20 points in just four innings. Defensively, Elijah Deming couldn’t be more accurate fielding six of six.
Rounding out the double header the team took on Dolores, a tough loss, with the game called after five innings. Final score of 8-20 at the hands of the Bears, who had strong defensive play, six boys fielding over 0.750 and five at 1.000. Garcia, Murphy, and Phelan were all on the mound, with Garcia throwing 60 pitches with very few errors. Once again Rogers’ bat was on point, and he was able to score three runs on the evening.
There are five regular season games left before Districts. Coach Blazon is hoping “Cowboy fans will come down to the field to cheer on their team and fill the stands.” Thursday, the Coal Ridge Titans will travel to Meeker with varsity at 4 p.m. and JV to follow. Friday, the weather looks to continue to be excellent for a double header against Rangely, the Panthers will travel to Meeker with games beginning at 2 p.m.
