Cowboys bring home all-conference honors from 2A multi-league meet

MEEKER I Cowboy tracksters were able to see how they stacked up against those in their own class at the Multi-League Championship Meet. The three-day meet started Thursday with pole vault with the rest of the field and running events Friday and Saturday. It was the first meet of the year with only 2A competition was present.

“This past weekend in Grand Junction was really good for the team and we brought home some well-earned rewards,” commented head coach John Strate. “Looking at some individual performances as well as some of the relays gives us some great insight into what we should be the most competitive with at the state meet in two weeks.”

Multiple Cowboys earned all-conference honors; meaning they are first in the league in an individual event. Meeker honorees are seniors Gracie Bradfield, Megan Shelton and Kenzie Turner; junior Tevin Pelloni and sophomore Jeremy Woodward.

Bradfield earned all-conference in the 100-meter dash and 400-meter run. She was on a first place 4×100-meter relay with Savanah Mendenhall, Shelton and Sarah Kracht and on the first place 4×400-meter relay team with Kirsten Brown, Mendenhall and Hailey Knowles.

Shelton is all-conference in the discus and is looking like she will be a key member of two relays heading into the state meet.

Turner’s all-conference honors come in the pole vault. She is the first female vaulter in Meeker High School history to earn all-conference honors. “Her hard work and determination have really paid off for her as she was dominant in the vault at the league meet,” said Strate.

Pelloni earned all-conference in the pole vault. Strate commented on the success of the vaulting program, “After having vault for only three years we are very excited to watch the program grow. Right now it looks like we should be taking four boys to the state if the 11-foot mark that Cooper Main hit at the league meet sticks.”

Woodward has earned multiple all-conference awards in both long jump and the triple jump. He is a part of the winning 4×100 relay with Andy Kracht, Porter Hossack and Kelton Turner, and ran a leg on a 4×400 relay that took second with Colby Clatterbaugh, Tannen Kennedy and Spud White. Both of these relays are in an excellent position heading into the state meet.

The Cowboys have one more week to fine tune and prepare for state. The time will give the younger athletes a chance to hit personal bests at the final regular season track meet this Saturday at Grand Valley High School in Parachute, Colorado.
