The Rangely Panther cross country team headed to the Hotchkiss Bulldog Invitational this past weekend, Saturday, Sept. 7. The meet is held behind the high school where it is desert and hilly. The meet is not known for fast times but lots of good competition. There was a total of 11 teams with 82 male athletes and 69 female athletes.
The girls were the first on the line. Mary Scoggins was ready to go to battle with some of her friends from other schools as she took off with a pack of girls. She was able to settle into a nice pace with three other girls from Palisade, Paonia and Basalt, as she came off the last hill she was able to put it into another gear and leave all but one girl who they battled it out until the finish, which she came out ahead. Scoggins placed eighth overall with a time of 24:24. Chloe Filfred was the next one to come in with a time of 28:45 and placing 22nd. This is a new season best for her. Rylee Allred also had a great finish as she held off another runner the last 100 meters and gain on another runner. She had a time of 37:10 which is just off her personal best. Brooke Filfred was running well but then decided she wanted to see more of the course so took a wrong turn. She ended with a time of 45:06.
The boys ran well as they started off with Colton Noel leading them then followed by Andrew Dorris, Fisher Winder and Anthony Dorris ran together. Colton Noel took off in the middle of the pack but continued to move up as the race progressed. He finished in 29th place with a time of 23:14. Andrew ran a new personal best on a harder course with a time of 24:24. Anthony and Fisher ran together the whole race as they encourage and challenge each other to keep going. Fisher was able to out sprint Anthony for a time of 27:51.79, with Anthony coming in with a time of 27:51.91.
“The boys’ team is so young that it is fun to see them improving, working together and encouraging each other during practice and at the meets,” Scoggins said.
The high school team will be traveling to the Eagle Valley Cross Country meet next Saturday, Sept. 14 at the Gypsum Creek Golf Course. There will be 17 teams represented from all classes; 1A to 5A schools. It is a course that is challenging since it is on a golf course with rolling hills and several sharp curves.
