RANGELY | It was a wet, muddy weekend in Logan, Utah, for the Spartan rodeo team.
“Our Spartan cowboys and cowgirls had a sloppy time at the Utah State University NIRA rodeo, placing at both ends of the arena despite terrible conditions,” said head coach Jed Moore.
The Beau Southern show just keeps rolling as the sophomore cowboy placed fifth in bareback riding and notched yet another win in bull riding with a weekend high of 82 points in the first round. Southern’s performances this fall have him ranked as the No. 1 bull rider in the nation as well as the No. 3 spot in the nation’s all around race.
Upperclassman Wyatt Hallam stepped outside of his comfort zone and entered a completely new event, filling a roster gap in steer wrestling. Despite it being his first ever rodeo in that event, Hallam threw his steer in just over 12 seconds to place fourth in the second round. Hallam and team roping partner Johnny Pavkov also qualified for the short round, placing ninth overall.
The freshmen bull riders are also finding their groove as McCall Hopkins placed third overall for the second week in a row, while Craig’s Dillon Burch scored his first ride of the year, placing third in the second round.
The Spartan cowgirls continued to be snake-bit by barrier penalties keeping them out of the championship round. Sophomore Danyelle Brown was CNCC’s only representative, placing third in the long go, and seventh overall in the breakaway roping.
This weekend the Spartan rodeo team is headed to the Utah Valley University home rodeo in Spanish Fork, Utah, to wrap up the fall season.
