Panther runners qualify for state

RANGELY | The Panthers headed to the Regional 4 2A meet held in Delta on Friday, Oct. 18, 2019. The meet had 17 teams from as far north as West Grand and as far south as Ignacio. The runners knew that they needed to place in the top 15 or be one of the top five teams to advance to state. For 2A a team scores the first three runners and the team with the lowest score wins.

The girls were the first on the line. They knew that if they all ran well they as a team could place in the top five as they did last year. Senior Hannah Wilkie and sophomore Mary Scoggins took off with the first pack of girls and were sitting in ninth and 10th place at about one and half miles into the race. Senior Chloe Filfred was in 30th place while freshman Rylee Allred was sitting in 65th and sophomore Brooke Filfred in 70th place. At this point all the runners knew that they needed to move up to place as a team.

Wilkie finished sixth with a time of 20:52, a new personal season best. Scoggins was right behind her taking eighth place with a time of 21:02. Chloe Filfred moved up to 28th place with a time of 23:54. Allred placed 64th with a new personal best of 27:49, beating her old time by almost three minutes. Brooke Filfred stayed in 70th place but was able to get a new season best of 35:18. After all the scores were added up the girls scored 32 points which placed them in third, one point behind Soroco and two points behind Colorado Rocky Mountain School. The girls will be running at state next weekend as a team.

“I couldn’t be more proud of the team. They have worked hard all season and they came out and did what needed to be done in order for them to qualify for state,” head coach Beth Scoggins said.

The boys have a young team and were all hoping for new personal bests and to work on working together for the future. Colton Noel, sophomore, took off with the first pack hoping that all his hard work would pay off. As the race progressed he fell back and was sitting in 20th with less than a mile left of the race. Andrew Dorris, freshman, had a goal of keeping Noel in his sight during the race while Fisher Winder and Anthony Dorris, both freshmen, were to keep Andrew in their sight. As the race continued Noel found a little more grit and pushed through to take 14th place with a time of 19:06. Andrew finished 34th with a time of 20:17. Winder and Anthony worked together the whole race with Anthony taking 57th with a time of 21:42 while Winder finished 58th with a time of 21:43.

“The team is young and I have a lot of confidence that in the future they will be a team to watch out for. I am very proud how all the boys raced and that they all got personal best at this meet,” Scoggins said.

The girls’ team and Noel will be racing at the Norris Penrose Event Center on Saturday, Oct. 26 in Colorado Springs.
