In the early 1950s I visited Meeker with my parents who were searching to buy a family ranch. We looked at properties on the beautiful White River including Sleepy Cat and Wyman Ranch. We stayed at the historic Meeker Hotel, where I was impressed with beautiful big game mounts and we ate next door at the Meeker Cafe. Driving to Rifle on the narrow two-lane road we had to stop frequently for migrating mule deer in the road as we witnessed the largest mule deer migration in North America. Currently many mule deer plus a flock of wild turkeys are year round residents claiming downtown Meeker as their home.
I moved my family to Meeker in 1976 and built a home in Meeker where I raised my family. What a wonderful community where law enforcement and citizens are friendly neighbors and crime rate is extremely low. School spirit, sports activities (i.e. wrestling, volleyball, basketball), and local organizations (churches, Cowbells, Cattlemen, Woolgrowers, Meeker Sportsmen Club, Masonry, Old Timers and Meeker Golf Association) activities serve to entertain local residents and improve the quality of life of the Meeker community.
Employment opportunities are somewhat limited and survival is dependent upon qualifications, versatility, and willingness to adapt to change and those options which become available. Meeker is fortunate to have a new Pioneer Hospital and Walbridge Wing assisted living and Fairfield apartments. A newcomer, Grant Family Dentistry, offers state of the art dentistry services to Meeker residents who do not have to drive out-of-town for complete professional dental services
Parking is usually not a problem in Meeker and you can even drive your ATV to work and business. White River Park and a drive up the White River to Lake Avery or Trappers Lake is only minutes away where you can experience quality outdoor recreation. I ask you where else can you find so many nice people, good schools, medical facilities, friendly businesses, high quality of life, quality natural environment, and social activities as are currently available in Meeker, Colorado?
