Wish we could get up a railway scare — or a dog fight — every week so we’d have something to fill the local column with.

County Clerk Walbridge has been doing a real brisk business in recording projected railway right-of-way papers lately. Where there is so much smoke there ought to be some fire — some day.

A unique contraption was seen on our streets this week. It was a snow plow attached to the front of a big truck, and is said to be a Rifle invention. According to reports, it has not proved a success in actual operation.

Somebody sent a lengthy communication to The Herald office this week signed, “A Subscriber,” but neglected the very important matter of signing his or her name to the communication. If you wish the communication published send in your name. The Herald, like all other responsible papers, pays no attention to anonymous letters.

An exciting runaway took place on Main Street last Saturday when a team belonging to Edwin Morgan of Ninemile ran away. It is said a dog ran out from somewhere and frightened the team and in making the turn at Fourth Street, the horses ran against one of the trees in front of Dr. Farthing’s office with such force that it was injured so that it had to be killed. People who own dogs should not allow them (the dogs) to loaf on the main streets; because they will take after a runaway team or horses, and cause damage and ill-feeling as did Saturday’s episode.

Rio Blanco County was one of 11 Colorado counties showing a decrease in recorded retail sales for the third quarter of 1969, according to figures released by the Colorado School of Business.

Two of Meeker’s foremost sportsmen, County Judge Keith Dunbar and Bill Goosman, each bagged their Christmas goose. The story is the two men brought the geese “down” the last day of the season at the local goose habitat. The Judge’s bird weighed 8 pounds and Bill’s tipped the scales at 7 pounds.

A fast moving fire Jan. 23 damaged a two-story townhouse at 1279 Park Street in Meeker. The occupants, Rodney and Tisha Dunham and family, escaped without harm and, according to police, stayed with relatives.

The present plan to reintroduce the wolf to Colorado needs to be tempered with a bit of history. The livestock industry and the grey wolf cannot coexist. ~Martin Villa, Meeker

Dr. James W. Short, a member of the surgical resident’s staff at Scott and White Hospital in Temple, Texas, during 1969, started practice for general medicine and surgery in Rangely on Jan. 14.

Rangely’s city council Monday night voted to take preliminary steps toward selecting an architect for the proposed city building here.

Adolescence and snowdrifts are about the only problems that disappear if you ignore them long enough.

A second round of public meetings will be held by the Bureau of Land Management for Draft White River Resource Management Plan (RMP).

Whether you call them milkcaps or POGs, the game’s the same. And playing them is only half the fun. Milkcaps are becoming one of the hottest collectible and trade items around.
