Obituary: Beatrice Hume

Beatrice Hume

April 16, 1923 ~ March 11, 2020

Beatrice Hume passed away in the early morning of March 11, 2020, in her room at Rangely District Hospital surrounded by her loving family.  She became a full time resident in the long-term care unit at Rangely District Hospital in October of 2014.

Bea was born on April 16, 1923, in Lordsburg, New Mexico to Maria (Castillo)and Refugio Madero. She lived in Shakespeare, New Mexico, and attended school in Lordsburg, a couple miles away, along with her brothers, Leandro and Nino, and her sisters, Jesus and Amalia (PeeWee).

She met her husband of 62 years, Ray Hume, Jr. (he passed away in 2008) in Lordsburg on her way to a movie with her sister PeeWee.  They later married in Hollywood, California on November 15, 1945, only two days after Jr.’s ship arrived from his service in the Army during World War II.

Bea is survived by her five children.  Fern Arnn (Charlie, deceased) of Vernal Utah, Janice Porter, Bill Hume (Julie), John Hume (Beckey) all of Rangely, Colorado and Barbara Williams (Jack) of Casper Wyoming as well as 13 Grandchildren with one more by marriage, 28 Great-grandchildren with 12 more by marriage, 6 great-great grandchildren with seven more by marriage and three new babies due this spring.

Her parents, Maria and Refugio Madero, preceded her in death as well as both of her brothers and her two sisters.

Bea and Jr. moved to Rangely in 1947. Along with raising their five children, Bea worked in the family businesses over the years here in Rangely.  They owned and operated Headquarters Bar and Café where she served some great Mexican Food from the Café.  In 1974 the family purchased Nichols Market where much of the Hume family, including Bea worked over the years.  It is still operated today by her son, Bill Hume.

She was a member of the Rangely Elkettes and helped with many of their benevolent activities.  She was a member of the Rangely Christian Church and enjoyed attending services and visiting with friends.  Her greatest joy was when someone came to Christ.

The family spent a lot of time out in the hills around Rangely.  Load up the truck with kids and dogs and let’s go have a picnic!  She also spent a lot of time in her yard enjoying her bushes and flowers.

She loved to gather her family together and cook holiday meals and of course her special Mexican dishes!  She spent time teaching the girls in the family how to fix many of her favorite dishes.  Her cheese enchiladas are still known as some of the best around!

After she became a resident in the long-term care unit she shared many stories from the past with her family, friends and the staff.  She enjoyed going through old photos and if you came to see her you found her room covered with photos of her kids, grandkids, great-grandkids and her great-great-grandkids.  She was so proud of each and every one of them.  She always saw the best in them and did her best to encourage them.  She will be greatly missed by many!

Funeral services will be held for Bea on Saturday, April 18, 2020, at the Rangely Christian Church, 501 Darius Ave. at 11 am.  Burial will be held after the service at the Rangely Cemetery.
