For what may be the first time ever, or at least the first time in recent memory, Halloween will coincide with the end of daylight-saving time, giving everyone a chance for an extra hour of trick or treating, or haunting and spooking, or whatever else you might be planning for the annual celebration of scariness. Whether you’re into Halloween or harvest parties, don’t forget to set your clock back one hour before you go to sleep Saturday night.
Don’t go calling your favorite hunter a nimrod. Even if he or she fills a tag this season. The word “nimrod” was originally considered a compliment, as it means “skilled hunter.” But as early as 1933, the word took on the slang meaning we are familiar with today —­ describing a stupid person or an idiot. The question is, how did a complimentary word meaning “skilled hunter” turn into a derogatory term? Any ideas?
Oct. 31 through Nov. 2 is Dia de los Muertos, or the Day of the Day. Well, it’s actually three days, but who’s counting? This Mexican holiday honors and celebrates loved ones who have died, and sweet desserts in the shape of skulls are a common theme.
