RANGELY | The Rangely Panther cross country teams were busy this past weekend, playing host to a six team varsity meet Friday and then hosting another four teams Saturday for a JV meet. The course was deceptively challenging, running over rolling hills in the grass of the beautiful Cedar Ridges golf course.
“It was fun hosting a meet here in Rangely, we had a lot of support from the community as they came out to watch. It was especially nice having the college girls basketball team come out and help too. I’m hoping that we can host more cross country meets in the future,” head coach Beth Scoggins said.
Mary Scoggins, who keeps working hard and getting better, continued to lead the girls team, finishing ninth overall in 23:08. Dixie Rhea, Annika Cantrell, and Adelynn Halcomb rounded out the varsity runners on Friday, finishing with times of 26:20, 29:23, and 32:31, respectively. Macy Morgan finished strong on Saturday in a time of 34:19 as Brooke Filfred came in at 40:27.
The boys team again proved to be a tough group of harriers, finishing the meet as the top 2A team on Friday. Andrew Dorris and Alex Black led the pack of eight with top 10 finishes, placing 8th with a time of 20:09 and 9th in 20:12, respectively. Colton Noel finished shortly after in 21:12, as Fisher Winder (22:46), Kevin Wren (22:52), Timothy Scoggins (23:38), Anthony Dorris (25:18), and Gabe Polley (23:32) all finished strongly to help the team. Brent Cantrell and Ashton Bennet raced for the Panthers on Saturday, getting through the course in times of 33:52 and 34:45, respectively.
The Panther harriers received some bittersweet news this week, as CHSAA has decided to allow football to start up this fall. While Rangely is excited to get back to playing football, the boys who gave cross country a shot will be greatly missed on the cross country team. Several of the boys will be running their last meet this weekend before they head back to the football field.
“We will miss having the football boys around, they have been a really positive addition to the team. I wish them the best during their football season and am thankful to have gotten the chance to coach them,” coach Scoggins said.
The Panthers will travel to Craig, Colorado, for a JV meet on Friday at Loudy Simpson Park. The varsity teams will then run the same course the following morning. Coach Scoggins again would like to thank everyone for their help and support this past weekend.
