Charlie Brown was an inspiration for numerous members of the Brown family to erect a flagpole at the restored Coal Creek School. The Brown Family did it in honor of members of the descendants of Charles Francis (C. F.) Brown, who came to Meeker in 1898 and was quickly enlisted to teach at Coal Creek School, and in recognition of the family members who were teachers and/or attended rural schools throughout the area. In addition, two family members became superintendents of the Rio Blanco County Schools in the early 1900s.
Members of the Brown family purchased and set up the flagpole along with help from friends and a crew and equipment from the White River Electric Association. Just as in the pioneer’s days the community came together to help each other.
