RBC | The White River National Forest’s winter motor vehicle use season begins Nov. 23.
During the winter season, all wheeled vehicles, including bikes, are limited to plowed routes or designated routes open through special order. Winter Motor Vehicle Use Maps identify routes and areas designated for “over the snow” motor vehicle travel, such as snowmobiles. Motor Vehicle Use Maps are free and available at all Ranger Districts or online.
“These winter regulations are an important part of keeping the White River National Forest a premiere location for winter recreation by helping maintain conditions for activities like snowmobiling, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing,” said Acting Forest Supervisor Lisa Stoeffler. “They are also in place to protect road quality, public safety and critical winter habitat for wildlife.”
During the winter months, snowmobile clubs groom many roads for snowmobiling and cross-country skiing as a public service using volunteer time and funding from private and partner sources. Respecting signs and travel restrictions will help protect this investment in maintaining groomed surfaces and winter recreation opportunities.
The Vail Pass Winter Recreation Area switched to winter use Nov. 16. Fee collections for this area will begin on Nov. 28 when grooming starts. Day passes are $10 and season passes are $65.
