‘Stellar showing’ for Panther girls

RANGELY | After competing in the Cardinal Invitational in Parachute, Colorado, this past weekend, the Rangely Panthers track and field team is quickly approaching the midway point of the season in full stride. For the third week in a row the Panthers were led by stellar performances of the upperclassmen girls.

Senior Dixie Rhea had another record-breaking day as she ran 26.70 in the 200-meter dash to take second. Rhea also won the 100-meter dash in 13.09, was third in the long jump with a jump of 15-0, and helped the Panthers sprint medley relay win the event. Maya Mercado, also a senior, was a part of the winning sprint medley team and also secured a victory in the high jump with a clearance of 4-8. Mary Scoggins, junior, also added a lot of points to the girls squad as she anchored the sprint medley team to go with a first in the long jump (15-10.25), second in the 800-meter run (2:36.39), and third in the triple jump (32-11.75). Hayley Burr, also a junior, was the final member of the winning sprint medley and also a major contributor to the team’s points with fourth place finishes in both the 100-meter hurdles (19.24) and 300-meter hurdles (52.44).

Also competing for the lady Panthers was Rylee Allred (discus, second, 92-0; shot put, ninth, 26-0.5), Annika Cantrell (high jump, third, 4-7; discus, 68-11; 200, 32.83), Mackenzie Manchester (shot put, sixth, 27-11; 100 hurdles, seventh, 21.88; discus, 67-4), Macy Morgan (1,600-meter, 10th, 8:53.76; 400-meter, 1:51.20; long jump, 8-1.5), Kyrah Phelps (discus, fifth, 76-8; shot put, 10th, 25-6), Emma Smith (long jump, eighth, 13-7; 100, 15.26), and Kristiana Terry (long jump, 10th, 12-6; 400-meter, 1:16.46).

As has been the case early on this season for the boys, Kenyon Cochrane and Timothy Scoggins led the team with their wide range of performances. Cochrane pulled a tough double victory in the discus (133-10) and high jump (5-7) as well as placed sixth in the shot put (35-2). Scoggins finished right behind Cochrane in the high jump for second (5-7), then threw 37-4.25 in the shot put to finish third to go along with a pair of seventh place finishes in the 100 (12.35) and 200 dashes (24.94).

Justin Allred (800-meter, 2:38.92; discus, 65-4; long jump, 13-4), Alex Black (100, 13.27; 800, 2:33.11), Andrew Dorris (1,600, seventh, 5:11.82; 800, seventh, 2:25.02), Anthony Dorris (400, 1:02.39), Colton Noel (1,600, ninth, 5:31.49; 800, 2:32.84), and Fisher Winder (long jump, 14-9.75) also competed well for the Panthers.

The Panthers will get to stay home this upcoming weekend as they host the Rangely Panther Invitational on Friday before heading to Hayden on Wednesday for the Tiger/Bulldog Invitational.
