Panthers host 11 teams at Invitational track meet

RANGELY | This past weekend, the Rangely High School track and field team was able to stay home and host 11 schools for the Rangely Panther Invitational. Both the boys and girls competed very well as they ran, threw, and jumped personal bests. At the end of the day, the boys were able to score 48.5 points to place sixth and the girls managed 107 points to finish third.

Timothy Scoggins kept himself quite busy once again, competing in the 100- and 200-meter dashes as well as the high jump and shot put. Scoggins set a personal record in both the high jump with a clearance of 5 feet 9 inches and the 200 dash with a time of 24.89 seconds. He finished second and fourth respectively in these events to go with his third place finish in the shot put (36-10.5) and time of 12.55 in the 100 dash. Kenyon Cochrane threw a huge personal record of 142-1 as he dominated the field in the discus. This throw now has Cochrane ranked fifth in the state for 2A. Cochrane also placed third in the high jump when he cleared 5-7 for the second weekend in a row and threw the shot put 33-7. Andrew Dorris competed well for the Panthers as he lowered his best 800-meter time to 2:16.87 and ran the 1,600-meter in 5:13.87. Dorris placed third in both events.

Also competing for the boys was Justin Allred (800, 2:37.38; discus, 71-11; long jump, 14-4.75), Alex Black (1,600, 5:43.65), Anthony Dorris (400, 1:03.23), and Colton Noel (1,600, 5:27.46; 800, 2:26.17).

To go with a pair of first place finishes, Dixie Rhea lowered her personal and school record in the 200-meter to 26.42. Rhea also won the 100 dash in 12.86 and finished third in the long jump (15-2). Mary Scoggins joined Rhea with several wins, beating the field with a personal best time of 2:33.05 in the 800 and with distances of 15-10.2 and 33-1 in the long and triple jump, respectively. Hayley Burr saw lots of improvements throughout the day as she set a personal record in all three of her events. Burr finished third in both the 100-meter hurdles and 300-meter hurdles (19.06 and 51.81, respectively) and ran the 200 in 28.81 to place eighth. Maya Mercado and Annika Cantrell tied for third in the high jump as they both cleared 4-7. Cantrell also competed in the discus with a throw of 62-1.

Rylee Allred and Kyrah Phelps found a lot of success for the lady Panthers in the throwing rings. Allred was just shy of a personal best when she threw 94-8 in the discus to finish third. Phelps managed a personal record when she threw the discus 94-1 to finish right behind Allred in fourth. The two had similar results in the shot put, with Allred finishing ninth (25-9) and Phelps just a couple inches back in 10th (25-7). Macy Morgan (1,600, 10th, 9:06.22; 400, 1:48.52; long jump, 8-1), Emma Smith (long jump, eighth, 13-3.5; 100, 15.05; 200, 31.48), and Kristiana Terry (long jump, 10-9.75) also competed well on the girls side.

“It is hard to believe that we are halfway through the season. It is going too fast,” said coach Beth Scoggins. “The team is looking pretty good, but we still have some work to do. We are trying to make every meet and practice count.”

The Panthers will double up with track meets this week, competing on June 2 at the Tiger/Bulldog Invitational and the Meeker Invitational on June 4.
