Rangely XC competes at Basalt Invitational

RANGELY I The Rangely Middle School cross country team made their debut in Basalt on Saturday, Aug. 28. The meet was held at the Crown Mountain Park in El Jebel. The athlete ran a 1.5 course around soccer fields, on single track and through a creek. The race was a combined race of girls and boys running together.

The team was made up of five girls and one boy for this weekend. The team was led by eighth-grader TyLee Fielder who placed seventh overall and came in second in the girls division she ran a 11:43. Matthew Morgan, also an eighth-grader, was next to come in with a time of 13:34 for 14th place. The seventh grade was represented by Samantha Granger and Rachel Elder. They both came in right behind Matthew taking 15th and 16th place respectively. Samantha ran a 14:12 and Rachel a 14:13. Sixth-grader Sydney Webster completed the course in 14:34 and sixth-grader Faith Prieto finished the race in 15:45.

The team will run at the Rangely Fast, Flat and Free race this Saturday at Septemberfest. It will be a longer race than what they are used to but it will be good for them, said Coach Beth Scoggins.

The Rangely High School cross country team headed to Basalt to run at the Crown Mountain Park in El Jebel. The team was excited to return to a course they knew since they ran it last year. The meet was bigger than it has been in the past with 10 full teams and close to 100 athletes in each race. The athletes found themselves running on single track, around soccer fields and through creeks.

The boys team had all eight athletes running this week. The team took seventh overall. Andrew Dorris found himself leading the Panthers, he took ninth place overall with a time of 18:42. Colton Noel, who was ill last week, moved up in the field with a time of 20:49. Anthony Dorris placed third on the team with a time of 21:28. Kevin Wren, James Talbot and Fisher Winder ran together as a pack, coming in with 22:02, 22:05 and 22:07, respectively. Joseph Adams, still new to the sport, came in with a 23:22. Justin Allred, still fighting illness and having wisdom teeth pulled, ran a 27:38.

Coach Scoggins said, “The boys team has a lot of potential, they just need to get there. They have been working hard on the track and it will come with time.”

The girls only had three running this weekend. The team was missing one to injury and the other to the Meeker Mustang Makeover. Mary Scoggins, who has been fighting a cold all week, found herself taking ninth place also with a time of 21:32. Hayley Burr, who is a sprinter, took 1:30 off her time from last week with a time of 27:33. Macy Morgan improved by 40 seconds with a time of 32:02, respectively.

The team will be taking this weekend off to add some extra practices in and to be able to enjoy the Septemberfest weekend. The next meet is on Saturday, Sept. 12, for the Joe Vigil Invitational in Alamosa.
