Rangely runners head to regionals Oct. 22

RANGELY I The Rangely middle school cross country team had its last meet of the season this past weekend. They had the opportunity to run in Aspen in the Chris Severy Invitational. This race is known to be a challenging race, not only is it hilly it is also a 2.4 mile course.

The girls started first. Tylee Fielder took 19th place with a time of 22:06. Next in line for the girls was Taya Wren with a time of 24:33. Rachel Elder took third on the girls team with a time of 26:12. Sydney Webster, who hasn’t been able to run for the last couple of weeks, finished the race with Sammie Granger. Webster had a time of 29:28 while Granger had a time of 29:29 respectively. As a team the girls were able to take fifth overall.

For the boys team of two, Jay Nickson ran a 20:53 and Matthew Morgan ran a 24:37.

“I am super proud of each of the runners. Aspen is a course where you dread running but afterwards you are proud that you conquered the race,” said head coach Beth Scoggins. “It was a pleasure to coach the middle school runners this year. They all were a lot of fun and worked hard. I hope to see all of them back next year. “

The Rangely High School cross country team found themselves in complete opposites from last week as they raced in Aspen at the Chris Severy invitational. Last week a course that was flat and fast to a course that was hilly, rough terrain and they had to deal with cold and wet weather. This week the goal was to race well and not worry about time. For most of the athletes this was the first time on this course.

Mary Scoggins met the goal well. She had one of her best races of the year on the course. She worked with another girl as they raced throughout the course. Mary completed the course in 23:09 and took sixth place overall. Hayley Burr and Macy Morgan were the other two runners for the girls. Burr had a good race and as usual had an amazing finish, she had a time of 31:27. Morgan had a time of 34:14, which isn’t too bad for the first time racing this course.

Andrew Dorris found himself out front of the crowd for the first part of the race but the hills were a little more challenging than he expected. He took 12th place and had a great time of 21:24.

“It is fun to see him take off so fast. He is going out to win the race,” coach Scoggins said.

Colton Noel was the second runner on the team. He finished the race in 23:45. Kevin Wren has been working hard in practice and making great gains and ran a 24:02. The next three runners — Anthony Dorris, Joseph Adams and Fisher Winder — worked together throughout the race and finished within a couple seconds of each other. Anthony Dorris had a time of 24:21.1, while Adams had a time of 24:21.7 and Winder had a 24:25.

“It is fun to see them work together throughout the whole race,” coach Scoggins commented. Justin Allred had a time of 27:14. As a team the boys took fifth place out of 10.

The team was set to run in Rifle on Wednesday, Oct. 13 with a meet at the Rifle golf course. It will be the last meet before regionals on Friday, Oct. 22.
