Beefing up heart health: Studies show lean beef can lower cholesterol and blood pressure

RBC | Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. The month of February is dedicated to raise awareness and spotlight the disease.

Thinking about cardiovascular health is important, especially when it comes to our diet. Beef is packed with nutrients, it includes protein, iron, zinc, and B vitamins. Research shows that lean beef not only is a natural source of those  essential nutrients but also can be included in a heart healthy diet.

A common misconception is that beef is an aid for raising cholesterol and it is not heart healthy, but beef has been proven to lower cholesterol, aid in weight loss, and lower blood pressure.

In the BOLD Study (Beef in an Optimal Lean Diet) done by Pennsylvania State University researchers showed that consuming lean beef everyday lowered LDL cholesterol by 10 percent, which is significant as high LDL cholesterol levels often create higher risk for heart disease.

Another study by the University of Colorado, called the Beef WISE Study (Beef’s Role in Weight Improvement, Satisfaction, and Energy) showed that lean beef positively impacted blood pressure and LDL numbers, as well as help with weight loss. Beef is a great resource to add to your heart healthy diet.
