A new option for dining and entertainment will open next week, March 15, at 364 7th St. in Meeker (the former location of The Fork). Owner Frank Maestas has partnered with his cousin Patrick Maestas to create the Black Sulphur Tavern.
Frank, who has been in the oil and gas industry for 13 years and previously worked in the service industry for four years, said via email, “Our family has visited Meeker and Rifle for as long as I can remember for hunting seasons. My favorite place in the whole world is Piceance. That is where the name for the Tavern came from. We have so many memories there over the years. I spend a lot of time up there hunting, riding and enjoying the views of the wildlife. I grew up in Denver and it has become busier than I prefer. Spending time in Meeker, seeing the slower pace of life and all it has to offer has been intoxicating. The views alone are always picture-perfect and amazing.”
Patrick is the father of two and has a background in aggregate systems. Also a Colorado native, Patrick has spent a lot of time in the Rifle and Meeker area.
“Our great-grandfather brought our family to the area way back when on hunting and camping trips. We are excited to be part of the community and look forward to the future,” Frank said.
When he’s not at work in oil and gas, Frank spends his time in Meeker with family and friends who have expressed their excitement for his new venture.
“When I noticed the space available for rent I thought to myself, man this could be a great opportunity. I looked at it and spent some time talking with the guys at the Masons, who were very welcoming and polite. I came up with the idea for a sports bar and the planning began. I knew it would be a slow process from the time I signed the lease until we opened. I was OK with that as I am thinking long-term with my goals,” Maestas said, adding that they visit Chippers often. “Larin and Danielle have a great place that a lot of people enjoy, so we hope to add to that in the town.”
Black Sulphur Tavern is a sports bar, providing “great food, games, great drinks and an amazing atmosphere to watch any sporting event” with a full food and drink menu and “lots to do and see.”
Frank said their original plan was just to offer frozen pizza. They’ve since added burgers, fresh pizza, hot wings and finger foods.
“We appreciate everyone’s support so far and look forward to being around a long time. We are big on family as well as community and will be involved in community events.”
Mark your calendar for March 15 at 4 p.m. for the grand opening. “We are having drink specials and giveaways to appreciate people spending their hard-earned money with us,” Frank added.
The Tavern will be open Wednesdays and Thursdays from 3-9 p.m., Fridays from 3 p.m. to 1 a.m., Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. and Sundays from 11 a.m. to midnight.
