MEEKER | The Barone Middle School girls basketball finished their season with a double-elimination tournament on Friday and Saturday. The seventh grade teams played on Friday and eighth grade teams on Saturday.
The eighth grade B team won their first game against Rangely by a score of 40-20. Leading scorers were Olivia Griffiths with 14, Lili Hernandez-Pena with 11, Kayla Castillo, Sawyer May and Taylor Bain with four each and Ava Nay chipped in three. They lost their second game to Steamboat 16-28 as well as their third game to Craig. The eighth grade A team lost their first game to Craig, who they had upset last week handing Craig their first loss of the season by a score of 10-20. Leading in scoring was Skylar Grimes with four while Castillo, Griffiths and Dawn Arnold each contributed two points. Their final game of the season ended in a double overtime loss to Steamboat 23-24. Leading in scoring in these games was Castillo with 11, Arnold with six, Ruth Leblanc with four and Grimes with two.
“The team improved each and every week and finished the season strong,” commented coach Mindy Finley.
Seventh grade A won their first game against Craig 18-8. Berkli Harvey had six, Norah Loar had four, Jayci Chintala had four, Sienna Rolen had two, and Avarie Caulfield had two.
7A lost their second game against Steamboat 26-21. Julie Kracht had nine, Loar had two, Rolen six, Payton Arnold had two, and Caulfield had two.
7A lost their last game 27-29. Harvey scored four, Julie Kracht four, Rolen eight, Chintala eight, Braylin Peña one, and Caulfield two.
“It was a great day with some really impressive basketball,” commented coach Claudia Bullen. “We are already excited for next year.”
