History Day is a national history competition for both middle and high school students and last week, several Barone Middle School students participated in the annual event.
Categories for the projects were: paper, exhibit, website, documentary or performance and this year’s topic was “Debate and Diplomacy.” More than 20,000 students across the state created projects for History Day and approximately 600 advanced to the state level, including BMS students Reagan Pearce, Jamie McLaughlin, Amber Holding, Linda Olivas, McKenna Kummer, Andy Urista, Megan Parker and Paige Jones.
Pearce created an individual exhibit on the topic of “Jonestown: Mass suicide or murder?” McLaughlin, Holding, Olivas and Kummer created a website describing women’s fashion throughout the centuries.
Urista, Parker and Jones did a group performance on the Meeker Massacre and qualified for the finals to perform for a second set of judges. The group received an award for best project for the Western Slope Region but did not advance to the national level.
“Even though none of the kids advanced to the national level, I am extremely proud of the work they did and how far they went,” BMS teacher/sponsor Kris Casey said of her students.
