MEEKER | The Barone Middle School wrestling team ended the regular season by hosting its annual tournament, finishing third in a field of nine teams with one individual champion and several top four placers. Meeker finished behind champion Craig and runner-up Gypsum Creek.
Barone Middle School seventh-grader Kelton Turner, was the only individual champion for the young Cowboys and he finished the season undefeated in 13 matches. Colby Clatterbaugh, Ryan Phelan and Ty Goedert all finished as consolation champions in the Meeker tournament and only lost two matches each this season.
Tucker Ercanbrack and Dax Sheridan both finished as runners-up in their respective brackets in the Meeker tournament. Austin Richardson, Cooper Main and Tyrell Lee were also consolation champs in their brackets, while Kaleb Nielson, Damon Dade, Liam Deming, Jeremy Woodward and Zach Eskelson all finished fourth in their weight classes.
The young Cowboys were coached by superintendent of schools Chris Selle and Todd Morris this season and Morris said 21 of the 27 wrestlers had either no wrestling experience or had just wrestled one year in Meeker’s youth program.
“They worked extremely hard ever day in practice and everyone of them improved over the five weeks,” Morris said. “We had Brian Merrifield, Coley Turner and J.C. Watt come in and share some of their expertise, which helped them all improve.”
The young Cowboys will return 14 seventh graders to next year’s team and hopefully several of the 13 eighth graders will wrestle at the high school level.
