MEEKER I The Cowboy track team took second for the boys and fourth for the girls in last weekend’s league meet.
“We were missing a couple of kids that would have scored some more points for both the boys and girls, but I think our teams did very well and are competitive,” commented co-head coach Hallie Blunt.
There were multiple 2A Western Slope League champions crowned last weekend on the Cowboy track team. Aspen Merrifield and Casey Brink both won pole vault for the Cowboys. Merrifield cleared 8 feet 6 inches and Brink 11’2” and are sitting well within the top 16 and have made it to the big show at the state track meet. The girls 4×100 meter relay took first over Cedaredge in the last few feet of the race, the team was composed of Ellie Hossack, Ainsley Selle, Merrifield, and Sarah Kracht. In the throwing events Zagar Brown finished on top and also set a personal record for the year of 41 feet 9.5 inches.
The multi-day event features teams from 1A-4A from across the western slope all competing for league titles and trying to get into the top 16 to make it to state.
Others placing in the top three:
- Men’s 4×100 meter relay finished second
- Zach Eskelson, boys shot, third
- Kracht, 200 meter run, second
- Brighton Bair, 1,600 meter run, second
- Men’s 4×200 meter relay, third
This coming weekend is the final opportunity for the tracksters to push faster and farther to make it to state. Pole Vaulters will have a chance on Friday beginning at 2 at Starbucks Stadium in Meeker to vault, and the varsity team will travel to Grand Valley Saturday for a meet which begins at 10 a.m.
