Bright Smiles program brings dental care to Meeker Elementary third graders

MEEKER |  In recognition of February as National Children’s Dental Health Month, White River Dental Hygiene has launched a new school-based dental initiative aimed at helping local students build healthy habits early and remove barriers to preventive care.

The program, called “Bright Smiles — Building Bright Smiles for Life,” debuted last month in partnership with Meeker Elementary School. The pilot effort focused on third graders, offering complimentary dental screenings, oral hygiene education, fluoride treatments and dental care goodie bags to students who returned parental consent forms.

Kari Brennan, owner of White River Dental Hygiene, said the vision behind Bright Smiles is simple but powerful: meet kids where they are and help them build lifelong habits. “Healthy smiles start young,” Brennan said. “Tooth decay is one of the most common chronic childhood conditions in the United States, yet it’s largely preventable. When children receive regular dental care early on, we can catch small concerns before they become painful, costly or disruptive to learning and daily life.”

Brennan explained that early dental health care is especially important because oral health directly affects growth, speech development, nutrition and self-confidence. Even primary, or “baby,” teeth play a critical role, holding space for permanent teeth and guiding proper jaw development. Dental pain can make it hard to concentrate in school, sleep well, or eat properly.

A major concern is access. Some children do not see a dentist regularly, allowing small problems to go unnoticed until they become infected and painful, sometimes leading to missed school days. “Most of these issues are preventable with regular visits, proper home care and early intervention,” Brennan said. “Early dental visits also give families the tools they need—brushing and flossing techniques, fluoride education, nutrition guidance—to build lifelong trust in preventive care.”

This year’s program was entirely funded and supported by Brennan and her business, providing supplies and treatments at no cost to families or the school district. “Our goal is to remove financial barriers so students can receive care without placing a burden on parents or the district,” she said.

To help sustain and expand the program, White River Dental Hygiene is working to secure grant funding to cover staffing, supplies, and mobile equipment. Brennan has also developed partnerships with the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment to borrow equipment.

Looking ahead, Brennan hopes to serve more students next school year and eventually expand services beyond screenings and fluoride treatments. Her long-term vision includes providing a full preventive dental experience in schools across all grades, potentially including cleanings, sealants, temporary fillings, fluoride applications and dental X-rays. “By providing this type of care in school, we can increase access and reduce missed classroom time,” Brennan noted. She hopes the program helps fill in the gaps so no child misses out on care or school due to preventable dental issues.

Brennan emphasized that the launch of Bright Smiles was a true community effort. She credited her family and her team at White River Dental Hygiene, corporate partners Colgate and Elevate Oral Care, Meeker School District personnel (Superintendent Chris Selle, nurse JoLyn Dolan, principal Shanna Holliday, administrator Trisha Granahan, and third grade teachers), and other supporting partners like Lisa Westoff with Community Health Services Inc., the Garfield County Public Health team, the Colorado Department of Public Health team, and fellow hygienists Crystal Mecham and Briana White.

Families can continue to support the program by promptly returning consent forms, encouraging consistent home care, and reinforcing the importance of oral health. “Healthy smiles support healthy kids,” she concluded. “And healthy kids are better prepared to learn, grow and thrive.”
