RANGELY I It is becoming apparent the words “basketball success” and Katelyn Brown are meant to be together. Brown recently won her third Denver Nuggets Skills Challenge state competition.
Brown, an eighth-grader at Rangely Middle School, not only had the high score in the girls 13- and 14-year-old division, her score of 387.5 was the highest score of the day in all divisions for both boys and girls.
The state competition is made up of regional winners who compete in Denver with the winners receiving tickets to the Nuggets game, and the top competitors are recognized on the floor before the game.
This year, there were approximately 3,000 participants competing, and Brown managed to outscore all of them. Her younger sister, Kassidee, also did extremely well at the state competition, as she was third in the 11- and 12-year-old division. Kassidee has placed twice at the state level and still has a couple years left to compete.
Kassidee and Katelyn received plaques for their accomplishments, and Katelyn was awarded a basketball autographed by the Denver Nuggets.
Rangely and Rio Blanco County were well represented at the state level by the Brown duo, who proved they have the skills to compete among the best.
