RANGELY | Cheri Smith’s journey with the Rangely School District began serendipitously in 1988, sparked by a parenting class led by the high school principal. Seeking guidance for parenting a child with disabilities, Cheri and her husband, Mark, were drawn to the principal’s educational philosophy. This connection led to a part-time position as a library aide, perfectly aligning with her family’s needs.
Over the years, Cheri’s role evolved significantly. Her initial six years were spent at the high school library, where Bob Vanderway, the librarian, mentored her with patience and kindness. “I was only 25 and knew nothing about the job,” Cheri recalls fondly. Bob’s mentorship, coupled with her involvement as a cheerleading advisor and speech coach, made her early years both challenging and rewarding.
Cheri then transitioned to the middle school library, where she thrived for eight years. She adored the middle school kids, finding humor in their antics and camaraderie among staff members. “We had the best group of people ever,” she reminisces. Her role at BOCES, born from a grant for professional development, expanded her horizons, allowing her to meet educators from across Western Colorado and enjoy frequent stays in Glenwood.
The grant’s end led Cheri to a secretarial position at BOCES, where she patiently awaited her dream role as the elementary secretary. Upon securing it, she found her true calling. “I have the best job in the entire world,” she declares.
Throughout her tenure, Cheri witnessed significant changes. Financial constraints have tightened, affecting everything from cheerleading uniforms to school trips. “The money available to the district has shrunk so much,” she observes. Despite these challenges, Cheri remains positive, driven by her belief in the importance of education and the resilience of the district.
Technological advancements posed another challenge, but Cheri embraced the learning curve, ensuring she stayed updated to perform her best. Finding substitutes remains a tough task, yet she handles it with strategic texting and a calm demeanor, ensuring minimal disruption for students.
Cheri’s role is anything but typical. Every day is different, filled with interactions with students, teachers, and parents. Her favorite aspect? The unpredictability and the joy of working with children who find her funny and teachers who see her as a supportive confidante.
Her positive attitude stems from a deep appreciation for her blessings, despite life’s challenges. Cheri feels supported by her family, friends, and colleagues, which bolsters her resilience. She values her role as a friendly face for everyone who walks through the school doors, striving to make each interaction positive.
Among her proudest achievements are her years of service pins, marking her dedication and love for her job. Cheri’s career choice confirmed her and Mark’s decision to stay in Rangely, providing a stable and fulfilling life for their family. It also inspired her daughter, Brooke, to become a teacher and return to the community.
Reflecting on the changes in students over the years, Cheri notes that societal shifts have forced children to grow up faster. Yet, she believes that the innate desire to learn remains strong. She is proud of how the community and school district support each other, especially during challenging times.
Looking ahead, Cheri hopes the district continues on its positive path, with administrators prioritizing students’ and the district’s best interests. She remains concerned about the condition of the buildings but is optimistic about the staff’s dedication.
As for her future, Cheri envisions continuing her role with the same passion and dedication until retirement. “I hope I get to continue in my job for the next however many years until I retire or die in my chair, my fancy office chair,” she says with a laugh, embodying the humor and warmth that have made her an indispensable part of the Rangely School District for over three decades.
Cheri Smith’s story is a testament to the power of dedication, positivity, and the profound impact one person can have on their community. Her unwavering commitment to the Rangely School District continues to inspire and uplift everyone around her.
