The proposed future land use at the conclusion of Natural Soda’s operation, in or around 2060, will be recreation, wildlife and/or livestock use and resource development as approved by the BLM. Natural Soda solution mines in situ nahcolite, a naturally occurring sodium bicarbonate (commonly referred to as baking soda). Sodium bicarbonate is a beneficial ingredient in food and personal hygiene items, pharmaceuticals, animal feed, fire extinguishers and pollution scrubbing equipment. Sodium bicarbonate has many other similar household and industrial uses. The Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety has established a decision date of August 6, 2012.
