CNCC women’s basketball team off to impressive 7-2 start

RANGELY I The Colorado Northwestern Community College women’s basketball team completed a 2-0 sweep the weekend before Thanksgiving in the CNCC Classic, increasing their season record to 7-2 overall this season.

The Lady Spartans picked up a victory in their home opener Nov. 20 by a 77-54 margin over Northern New Mexico College’s junior varsity program.
CNCC played solid on defense throughout their contest against the Lady Eagles, holding them to 26.7 percent shooting for the game (20-75 on field goal attempts). The Lady Spartans also collected 18 offensive rebounds and forced Northern New Mexico into making 14 turnovers.
In CNCC’s win, eight players contributed to the Lady Spartans’ total. Sophomore Sarah Midgley led the way scoring 17 points (6-12 on field goals). Also scoring for CNCC were Taylor Thomas (14 points), Kelsey Harvey (10 points), Tyra Rodriguez (9 points), Taylor Martin (9 points), Cylee Tuimaunei (7 points), Sierra Reynolds (6 points) and Shelby Harvey (5 points).
CNCC was led in rebounding by Taylor Thomas, who picked up a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Also having a strong rebounding night for the Lady Spartans were Kelsey Harvey with nine boards and Taylor Martin with seven.
On day two of the CNCC Classic, the Lady Spartans pushed their winning streak to four games with a 67-55 victory over Dawson Community College.
CNCC trailed by two points after the opening quarter, but they took off in the second, outscoring Dawson 24-13 for a nine-point halftime lead. The Lady Spartans would extend their lead to 20 points by the fourth quarter and were able to hold on for a 12-point victory.
CNCC shot 42.9 percent from the field (30-70 on field goal attempts) in the win while holding Dawson to 23.2 percent (16-69 on field goal attempts).
CNCC had great offensive balance on the afternoon with 10 players contributing to their 67 points.
Sarah Midgley and Taylor Martin led the Lady Spartans with 15 points apiece. Also scoring for CNCC were Megan Erickson (8 points), Rachel Prescott (8 points), Cylee Tuimaunei (7 points), Tyra Rodriguez (4 points), Shelby Harvey (4 points), Rylee Thompson (2 points), Sierra Reynolds (2 points) and Kanani Naipo (2 points).
The Lady Spartans were led by Martin, Rodriguez and Tuimaunei all with seven rebounds total.
The CNCC Lady Spartans (7-2) returned to the court over Thanksgiving weekend in Montana, at the Dawson Community College Thanksgiving Classic. The results were not known by press time.
The Lady Spartans will play Fort Berthold Community College on Friday at 4 p.m., and then will play again on Saturday against Dawson CC at 2 p.m.
