Local photographer extraordinaire, Steve Cochrane, won his second award this year at the Rocky Mountain Outdoor Writers and Photographers (RMOWP) conference which was held in Golden, Colorado, in June. The winning photo this year was named “Red Fox” and won the Member’s Choice category. Cochrane recalls taking the photograph in September 2015 just after sunrise in Grand Lake, Colorado. The portrait of a playful red fox is one of Steve’s favorites. Steve says foxes act like cats or dogs – playful, amusing, with a soft spirit. Foxes aren’t typically bothered by a human’s presence, especially one who is gentle and there to witness their magnificence. This particular red fox had just finished a mouse and was satisfied with a full belly.
Since the last HT interview with Cochrane, he has been busy planning guided photography trips. This time last year, covid was still restricting travel and Cochrane’s dreams of touring Africa with amateur photographers and teaching them tricks of the trade in photographing wildlife. This year, that dream is just a few minor challenges away. He and his wife Megan plan to make a trip next October as wildlife photography guides. He is well versed in the rhythm of wildlife and their life cycles which helps to plan for the opportunity to capture unique shots.
The Rocky Mountain Outdoor Writers and Photographers (RMOWP), established in 1973, is an organization “of professional and semi-professional photographers, writers, cinematographers, and artists who specialize in outdoor subjects, ranging from fishing and hunting to hiking and exploring public lands, with an emphasis on activities in the American West.” Each year they hold a conference for members to share their work and experiences. The conference also offers opportunities for the professional to form groups and take trips together. Cochrane recalls a sunrise excursion with a small group at the latest conference and a trip to the 14er Mt. Evans where they found baby goats prancing around. Cochrane has previously attempted to photograph them but they are very quick and don’t tarry for photo ops.
