PRESS RELEASE
RBC | As Colorado closes out its warmest winter on record, the Colorado Department of Human Services (CDHS) is reminding residents that the Low-income Energy Assistance Program (LEAP) offers more than help with heating bills. With an application deadline of April 30, 2026, eligible residents are encouraged to apply now for energy assistance, weatherization services, and emergency furnace repair or replacement.
Despite mild temperatures, home energy costs remain a burden. LEAP helps cover a portion of winter heating expenses, allowing households to allocate funds toward essentials like groceries and rent. So far, more than 105,000 Coloradans have applied, but an estimated 80% of eligible residents have not.
Eligible households may receive $200 to $1,000 depending on fuel type and income. To qualify, households must earn up to 60% of the state median income and pay heating costs directly or through rent, with at least one member who is a U.S. citizen or legal resident.
“LEAP is about more than a one-time payment,” said Maria Hopps, LEAP interim supervisor. “Weatherization and furnace support help make homes safer and more efficient long term.”
