RBC Commissioners held a call-in work session and brief regular meeting on Friday, July 29, to discuss plans related to Visionary Broadband’s departure as a value-added reseller (VAR) for broadband internet. While the county owns the broadband infrastructure, value-added resellers interact with the public on a customer service level, and pay the county a percentage of their fees. After Sept. 1, 2022, Cimarron Telecomunications will be the only VAR remaining in the county once Visionary’s contract ends.
The county will take on Visionary customers who do not choose to switch to Cimarron, but additional staff are needed to provide technical support for those customers. Revenue from acquiring those customers would offset the additional cost for new employees. No major interruption of service is anticipated, although short periods of downtime are anticipated for Visionary customers during the switch.
During the special meeting, the board approved the hiring of two full-time employees for the communications department.
