MEEKER | The cold and snow in Meeker did not hold the Cowboys back from a two-game victory over Nucla last Friday. All of March’s games will be away due to the winter weather still present in Meeker.
“Last year we began the year 0-7, this year we are focusing on strong practices, keeping the boys focused, which is so hard in the gym and not being on the field,” commented assistant coach Cody Smith. “I think it paid off, especially with the way they came out in the first inning of both games.”
In game one the Cowboys scored nine runs in the first and in game two they scored five, all of which were unanswered. Final scores 14-2 and 16-5.
Batting a thousand after game one was Finley Deming and Jake Blazon.
“We have been working on intensity in the batting cages and our bats showed it,” commented Smith.
In game two Blazon once again hit the 1000 mark going four for four and Ethan Quinn also went four for four.
“We have no seniors on the team this year, but the juniors have been playing with Coach Blazon since they were small, they work well together and this year their strength is really coming out,” said Smith.
Notable performance by Ryan Sullivan who, in game two, hit a three RBI triple in the third inning, Sullivan batted 667 bringing home a total of four runners in game two.
“Our pitchers took us into uncharted territory,” commented head coach Donald Blazon.
In game one Carson Klinzmann threw 65 total pitches for a complete game, of which 46 were strikes, giving him a strike percentage of .708.
“The strike percentage this weekend is a good recipe for success,” said Blazon.
In game two Jonathan Fitzzgibbons threw 63 in three innings with 41 strikes, which is a .651 strike percentage.
“Skylar Browning finished game two with the same kind of command,” commented Blazon.
Browning threw 30 total pitches with 21 strikes, giving him a .700 strike percentage.
“Our defense needs work, but I’m pleased with the team’s hustle and determination,” said Blazon.
Spring break this week means the Cowboys will have their next games, on Tuesday March 28 in Hotchkiss taking on North Fork. The first home games are scheduled for Friday, April 7.
