MEEKER | The Cowboy basketball team has been waiting patiently, and the wait is almost over. This weekend they host the White River Electric Association’s 22nd annual Cowboy Shootout.
“We have some new teams this year in the tournament,” began head coach Klark Kindler, “and we are changing things up a bit as some of the teams are only able to be there for one day.”
This year Grand Junction Central JV can only be there for day one, then Palisade JV will fill in for them on Friday, and finally Basalt will play on Saturday. Which means that on day one, regardless of the outcome, the Lotus School of Excellence team will move to the winners side of the bracket and the other teams will come in on the left side.
“This group of boys has really grown since last year; I noticed a change in them during football and was really looking forward to basketball,” said Kindler. “They are more competitive, stronger, and ready to go. If our practice scrimmages say anything, we are ready.”
Meeker will open up their season at 7:30 p.m. playing Monument Academy.
Returning varsity players for the Cowboys are: Casey Brink, Ryan Sullivan, Jace Mobley, Jonathan Fitzgibbons and Jacob Simonsen. Saturday at 10 a.m. is the three point contest followed by the dunk contest, and finally the placing round games begin once those are finished, the public is welcome to the contests prior to the games.
