On a chilly 48 degree Sunday in Arvada, two players from the Meeker softball team competed in the Colorado Coaches of Girls Sports (CCGS) Senior All State game. Brea Garcia from Meeker and Reagan Hafey from Craig brought great pride to the Meeker program through their impressive softball skills and sportsmanship competing at such a high level against very tough competition.
“Brea pitched extremely well against a solid hitting lineup facing some of the best hitters in the state,” commented head Cowboy coach Kendal Bergman, she was also head coach to the white all-state team with Garcia and Hafey.
Garcia’s first inning, she battled hard and struck out all three opponents and then forced the hitters to ground out time and time again in her second inning of work.
“She represented herself and Meeker extremely well during her outstanding pitching outing,” said Bergman.
Garcia also got time at second base and defended her position very well.
Reagan Hafey got time at second base and shortstop throughout the game and “was a steady defender in each of those positions,” commented Bergman. “She communicated well with her other teammates on the field and was a strong voice on and off the field.”
The Meeker players were on the White team for this game and their team was composed of players from Cortez, Brush, Lamar, La Junta, Holyoke. The opposing team was composed of players from Resurrection Christian, Strasburg, Eaton, Adams City, Limon, Sterling, Valley, and Platte Valley.
“Each team performed very well and it was a tight game throughout the seven innings,” said Bergman.
It was a pitchers’ duel each inning with a few big hits scoring each team runs. Solid defense kept the game very close, including a diving catch over the outfield fence to rob the opposing hitter from a homerun.
“The game was amazing to be a part of and this was an experience that all these players will never forget,” wrapped up Bergman. “I was so proud of the team’s performance and especially having players from our Meeker Cowboys represent so well.”
