The Meeker High School Class of 2020 established the “Cowboy Up” award to honor a community member, past or present, who has demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to Meeker High School. Each year the graduating class votes to select an inductee. The Class of 2022 chose former coach Debbie Cook.
Cook was inducted into the Colorado High School Activities Association Hall of Fame in 2017. Her teams posted a 393-125 mark in volleyball during her 22 years at the helm, winning nine conference titles and going to the state tournament nine times. She was named Coach of the Year three times by the Colorado Coaches of Girls’ Sports and she was named the Northwest League Coach of the Year eight times. Cook also coached track for 16 years and girls’ basketball. Through the years, Cook introduced many new programs to the district, including Drug Free Red Ribbon Week, the annual food drive for the food bank, Jump Rope for Heart, the Elk’s Hoop Shoot, 9Health Fair and she is known to have more students pass the President’s physical fitness test than any other Colorado school district.
