MEEKER | Cowboy baseball went 2-1 last week and played each league opponent for the first time this season.
Grand Valley fell easy 15-1 on Monday evening during a rescheduled home game.
Wednesday’s varsity and JV games against Rangely were the second wins of the week for both teams. The Cowboys took the game, despite a large number of errors, 8-3
Offensively Alex Garcia was top scorer, coming home three times, Jace Mobley scored twice, and Jake Blazon had a three RBI night.
“They had a lot of opportunities to win the game with all of our errors,” commented assistant coach Cody Smith, “without our errors they would have been scoreless.”
On the mound Johnathan Fitzgibbons threw six innings, 11 strikeouts and no errors to get the win.
“JT was hitting his spots from the hill vs Rangely,” began head coach Donald Blazon, “he worked hard and secured the win.”
Thursday afternoon 3A Basalt came to Meeker.
“We were behind 5-9 at the top of the sixth and it was still a winnable game,” commented Smith, “errors on our side and unable to get the bats going and we lost 5-15.”
“We played tough against Basalt but fell short,” said Blazon. “Seemed like their hits found the holes and we hit the ball right to the defense. That’s the way it goes.”
Spencer Gates, who hits out of the number five spot, led the entire team offensively when he had a three run homerun in the first and one additional RBI in the fifth.
Three pitchers took the mound Carson Klinzmann pitched three innings with six strikeouts, Ryan Sullivan 3.1 innings and five strikeouts and Skylar Browning .2 innings.
JV also played Rangely, Basalt, and Eagle Valley last week.
“Against Basalt Auggie Halstead kept them guessing from the hill but with little run support from the offensive we fell short,” said Blazon.
“Wil Schwartz took the mound in our JV game against Eagle Valley,” commented Blazon, “he has improved a lot with his pitching, he had 10 strikeouts and no walks; unfortunately he limited out and we couldn’t save the win”.
In game two with Eagle Valley Browning, Cooper, and Garcia all pitched a solid game and Finely Deming scored the winning run in the bottom half of the seventh inning.
In the Tuesday double header against Moffat County, the Cowboys fell 0-2 into two well matched games. In game one the Cowboys had trouble getting their bats going in then 2-4 loss and in game two Meeker was able to score a run in the seventh inning and nearly tied it up before falling 6-7.
The team will now play their final league games of the season, hosting Rangely Thursday and traveling to Grand Valley Saturday.
