MEEKER I The Meeker Cowboys have won three in a row. The boys’ basketball team is 6-3 in the league and 7-8 overall. They have been picking up steam these last few games and are sitting well going into regionals.
“We are playing much better,” commented head coach Klark Kindler. “We are really doing some great things.”
Friday in Rangely during the game against the Panthers the Cowboys opened with an excellent first quarter ahead 17-4.
“The boys got off to a good start and then we got into some foul trouble,” said Kindler.
In the second quarter, Rangely rallied back to take it to the locker room up by one over Meeker 23-24.
“Rangely got some momentum going, but it fired the boys up,” commented Kindler. “They worked really hard and made some big plays in the fourth quarter, especially the last two to three minutes.”
In the fourth quarter, despite the lack of home crowd advantage, the Cowboys outscored the Panthers 20-12 for a final score of 53-44.
The duo of senior Cole Rogers with 17 points and junior Ryan Phelan with 10 points led the Cowboy offense to victory.
Defensively, senior Elijah Deming had six rebounds and had a team high of nine.
This week is a busy week for the basketball teams with lots of traveling and games on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Thursday will be the second to last regular-season home game. “We have Soroco. They are big, but not quick,” Kindler said.
Friday Meeker is hosted by Hotchkiss and Saturday they travel north to Baggs to take on Little Snake.
Commenting on how the boys are preparing for this weekend, Kindler said of Hotchkiss, “They are really up and down, and we are unsure as what to expect. They have lost to some bad teams and beat some good ones, and Little Snake is our last non-league game.”
Thursday JV games begin at 4:30 p.m.
