The Meeker Cowboys had players out due to sickness, but that didn’t stop them from storming over Gunnison and Cedaredge. Two more wins put the Cowboys at 8-1 overall and 5-0 in the league.
Meeker beat Gunnison 56-50 led by Ryan Sullivan with 18 points and Ethan Quinn, Jace Mobley and Jacob Simonsen with 10. The Cowboys had been picked to win handily when illness struck the team. Down a key player for the Cowboys, Gunnison was able to make a run in the fourth quarter but the boys rose to the challenge.
On the road the Cowboys also faced Cedaredge and won 61-49. Meeker took a commanding lead in the first and never looked back. Mobley had 16 points, Sullivan 15 and Drew Drake 10. Quinn took charge off the boards with six rebounds. Mobley, Said Rodriguez and Simonsen each had five.
The Cowboys are just shy of being halfway through the season. They will start meeting teams for second matchups. One team they haven’t played yet is North Fork, who gave them their only loss not on the schedule. North Fork is 5-6 overall and 1-4 in the league. Their record, coupled with the Cowboys record, means Meeker could go into post season with only one loss and host playoffs.
This week Meeker will host Vail Mountain, Grand Valley, and North Fork. Vail Mountain will be Thursday; games begin at 4:15 p.m. The other two are Friday and Saturday respectively, with games beginning at 4 p.m. and 1 p.m.
