Currently, bison are designated as domestic wildlife in Colorado, and CPW does not have authority over wild free-ranging bison. In March of 2022, Colorado Parks and Wildlife staff agreed to create a local working group to address the issue of wild bison moving from Utah into Rio Blanco County, in northwest Colorado. From August to December 2023, CPW staff held several outreach meetings with local stakeholders representing the community, natural resource management, livestock producers and landowners, and Rio Blanco County.
