County, Days Gone By

DAYS GONE BY: April 13, 2023

The Meeker Herald ~ 125 years ago

  • The street cleaning department has a force of men at work cleaning out the town ditches preparatory to turning on the water.
  • A very large concentration participated in the beautiful services and listened to an able sermon by Rev. Mr. Bakes at St. James church last Sunday morning. The church was beautifully decorated for the occasion, and a fine musical program completed an ideal Easter service.

The Meeker Herald ~ 100 years ago

  • The Rifle mail truck broke down last Sunday between Rifle and the dinner station, with the result that no mail was received till Monday.
  • Fred Gibble is a believer in the spring slogan– “Paint up; Clean up.” His barber shop on market street is evidence of his belief.

The Meeker Herald ~ 50 years ago

  • MC Francis Kennedy almost had tears in his eyes (of laughter?) as he presented Fireman Jim Ruckman with a most honorable award for a duty above and beyond the call of duty… saving a cat’s life by giving it mouth to mouth resuscitation at a recent fire in Meeker.
  • Six high school students, members of the Meeker High School Chapter of Future Business Leaders of America, were in Fort Collins Monday and Tuesday of last week competing in the annual FBLA contest.

The Meeker Herald ~ 25 years ago

  • Children who are barely able to walk participate in the annual Meeker Easter Egg Hunt run by the Lions Club with the assistance from the Meeker Fire and Rescue Service.
  • This past Easter Sunday after many weeks of hard work, the Meeker Ministerial Fellowship held its first annual open community Sunrise Service at Starbuck Stadium.

Rangely Times ~ 50 years ago

  • The Rangely Town Council approved increases in the rate for water tap fees and water usage.
  • Community members, high school students, and everyone interested in a thought provoking lecture-discussion on philosophy as related to life experiences and insight into all phases of living are invited to visit the Rangely College campus April 30 to hear Gary Stahl, professor and chairman of the Department of Philosophy of the University of Colorado.

Rangely Times ~ 25 years ago

  • At the April 13 meeting of CNCC Board of Trustees, several action items were up for consideration. The first item was a request by CNCC residence hall students for a revision to the CNCC Visitation Policy, in order to allow 24 hour, seven days a week visitation privileges by other campus housing residents as they felt like their study habits were not being met. The request was ultimately killed over board members’ concerns about sex and alcohol.
  • On April 10th the St. James Guild entertained the residents of the Walbridge Wing and guests at the monthly birthday party. A large crowd was on hand to help Elizabeth Haws celebrate her 93rd birthday.
