County, Days Gone By

DAYS GONE BY: April 27, 2023

The Meeker Herald ~ 125 years ago

  • The Bar-Triangle Cattle Company of Meeker received a large bunch of range cattle this week.
  • Riley and Sheridan will begin harvest season with one of the latest improved J.I. Case threshing machines. Mr. Riley will be going to Denver shortly to purchase the new machine.

The Meeker Herald ~ 100 years ago

  • While in Denver a few weeks ago, Meeker’s Mr D.W. Simms of the Simms-Moulton company had an opportunity to talk to a number of influential and responsible railroad promoters. All predicted something done before the approaching summer was over.
  • H.W. Davis received a letter last week from Hugh Jones of Meeker, in which he relates the killing of a large bear that roamed the country’s whereabouts. Inasmuch as Mr. Jones is well known to a great many Sedgwick folks and others in this part of Kansas who ever went to Colorado to hunt, his story will be of interest to all.

The Meeker Herald ~ 50 years ago

  • Dr. Charles Williams from the Atomic Energy Commission is a big fan of jogging early in the morning and was recently given official permission by Mayor Ed Jirak to run the streets and was given a Meeker Cross Country sweatshirt. The gift started out as a little joke by DeWayne Merriam who found out that Dr. Williams was wondering if it was legal to jog in the mornings in Meeker.
  • Last Saturday afternoon at the fairgrounds was the date for the judging to determine who would be the Range Call Queen for 1973. Miss Janet Prockup was selected for the honor by turning in the best overall performance in three designated categories. First attendant was Vicki Caldwell and second attendant was Chris Oldland.

The Meeker Herald ~ 25 years ago

  • Meeker’s Jim Veitch was on hand to measure racks at the World Record Elk Tour and Sports Show at the fairgrounds over the weekend. Several deer and elk mounts qualified for the record books again this year.
  • Police were summoned to what was supposed to be a public disciplinary meeting on April 28 for Leon Oltmann, the Meeker High School assistant principal, after an anonymous caller allegedly threatened to kill a board member if the board fired Oltmann. Having a police officer in the hallway was just one of the unusual aspects of a meeting marked by angry challenges from taxpayers and a three-hour closed door session. While board members huddled in the closed session, upset citizens swiped the snacks prepared for the school board members, despite a district employee’s valiant efforts to halt the raids.

Rangely Times ~ 50 years ago

  • At the last regular meeting of the Rangely Town Council, the Hillcrest Subdivision owned by School District RE-4 was accepted for inclusion within the town limits subject to certain exceptions requested by the Zoning and Planning Board.
  • Commissioners had previously disapproved the plan developed by the Wilderness Country Club to be developed northeast of Meeker, but recently reversed this vote. Following the new approval of this plan, the next step is the actual engineering and planning called the “Preliminary Plan.”

Rangely Times ~ 25 years ago

  • The Rangely Northwestern Community College Natural Resources club has established a recycling program, which has been incorporated throughout the town of Rangely. The sole implementer of this program has been Chris Finek, a student at CNCC, who purchased 18 recycling bins last semester but he did not receive funding for the program until the middle of this fall semester.
  • Paper dolls made by the kindergarten and preschool classes of Rangely are decorating the windows of stores all over Meeker and Rangely.
