The Meeker Herald ~ 125 years ago

Another band of wandering gypsies struck town this week, and they put in a good part of their time in tormenting our residents to have their fortunes told and begging.

B.C. Howey has lost nearly a dozen head of cattle recently from unknown causes, but he thinks that it might be a result of them eating larkspur.

Gen. Gomez, whose specialty is lying in a hammock, is doubtless a firm believer in the adage, “Everything comes to him that waits.”

E.M Duensing, who is in the employ of Ed. Sanderson, on Black’s Gulch, had his right arm broken on Tuesday last. He was running a mower, and while the machine was going over a sliding place one of the horses made a sudden jump, throwing Mr. D off the seat with the result above stated.

Young sage hens are quite plentiful in the neighboring mesas, and so are grouse, but they are to be found higher up on the hills.

Six or seven big cars were parked in front of the Meeker Hotel, Sunday evening. All came from Axial oil field.

Our big rains of this past week did not in any way delay the outgoing or incoming mail trucks, which is evidence of the fine condition of the Meeker-Rifle roads.

Another big downpour rain, accompanied by a fierce electrical storm, visited this part of the valley Tuesday afternoon. If we could only get these torrential rains in the middle of June, what a great county this White River Valley would be.

Careless auto driving came near to being responsible for a tragedy, down the river this week. A law should be passed by the next session of legislature inflicting severe penalties on reckless auto drivers.

Frank Deering is a resident of Meeker once more. He has taken a job with one of the up-river saw mills.

Members of the Utopia Club met at the home of Lois Richardson with Myrana Bogle serving a yummy lemon filled angel cake for dessert. I had to tell this part first since it was the best part of the entire evening.

Mrs. Glendon Culverwell, Craig, State President for the Women’s Auxiliary of Colorado Wool Grower’s Association, this week reminds us of the annual “Make It Yourself With Wool” Home Sewing Contest.

Standing over tire tracks which run for hundreds of feet all over the football field is Harry Crawford, head custodian of Meeker High School. The car and its occupants tore up the field by speeding, taking hairpin turns and slamming on brakes. Mr. Crawford said that a similar incident, but lesser degree, happened earlier this spring on the backside of the high school and the scars still have not completely healed over. Crawford has little hope that the grass will grow back before football season begins. Meeker, which has the best field in Northwest Colorado, is now hurting.

Maclaine Shults stands proudly displaying the bunny she caught during the “Rabbit Chase” at the fair last weekend. She gets to take her furry friend home with her.

Sean McGraw is a member of one of the leading cattle families in eastern Rio Blanco County, but Sean loves hogs and does a great job of raising them. He raised the 1998 grand champion market hog this year, and he also won the 4-H/FFA grand championship last year, too.

State wildlife officials are offering a $1,000 reward for the public’s help to apprehend whoever killed at least 43 wild animals in Craig. People armed with small caliber and other firearms shot every animal they saw, including fawns, pronghorn, nursing does, and anything else that moved along a stretch of remote highway.

Denae Chintala had everything well in hand during the ladies lead at the county fair. Miss Chintala competed in the Bo Peep division.

Rangely Times ~ 50 years ago

Since these new road signs have been placed, there has been extensive defacing vandalism and destruction of signs. The County Commissioners, being concerned over this wanton destruction and the cost to the taxpayers ($30 each sign) feel it is necessary to take action. They are offering a $300 reward for information leading to arrest and conviction of anyone found damaging road signs.

The 4-H livestock sale for the Rio Blanco County Fairwill be held Aug. 21. The Rangely 4-H Clubs urge Rangely residents to support the 4-H Clubs and buy at the sale, Hogs, fat lambs and beef will be bid on at the sale.

Rangely Times ~ 25 years ago

The senior citizens of Rangely, Dinosaur and Blue Mountain have been busy this summer, starting out with entering a float in the Bedrock Days Parade this past June in Dinosaur. A busload of seniors spent another day on Blue Mountain watching about 60 hanggliders take off and soar overhead. The day was topped off with a potluck picnic.

The qualifications of Rangely High School’s new wrestling coach, Robin Fairchild, were brought to the attention of the Re-4 school board. Raymond Torsell and Claude Rose, two residents of Rangely, questioned the selection of Fairchild over candidate Brett Byers by RHS athletic director and principal Marty Bassett.

Grace Huitt and Jenny Collins take time out to laugh with each other while working on their new business venture, Cedar Tree Gifts and Floral.
