  • Dr. French has received word from State Veterinarian Gresswell in reply to the information sent to the latter regarding the mortality among the McHatton cattle. The vet says the disease is undoubtedly blackleg.
  • Deputy Game Warden Goodell arrived in town last Saturday after a trip down the river. He complains because the people in the lower country fed him on pork and kept their deer meat hanging in plain sight.

  • The Rifle Telegram reports the death of Frank Squire, for many years a very prominent Grand Valley Cattleman who was well known and loved throughout Rio Blanco County.
  • The Piceance Post Office was recently transferred from the Burke ranch to Dry Fork and HC Langston appointed Postmaster.

  • The Meeker Women’s Bowling Assn. held a handicap tournament last weekend at White River Lanes. The tourney was well attended with 10 five-women teams battling it out for top honors.
  • At an open hearing Tuesday in the Craig Bureau of Land Management (BLM) building, the Craig District Advisory Board, Nick Theos, of Meeker, chairman, did not buy the argument presented by Roberst M. Kennan, Jr., counsel for the National Wildlife Federation, (NWF), and other spokesmen. The NWF, headquartered in Washington, D.C., has on record an Intervention, Protest and Request for Cancellation of Grazing Privileges of the Visintainer Sheep company, as related to matters under section 3 of the Taylor Grazing Act.

  • Meeker MOPS is a non-profit organization designed to reach mothers of preschool children in areas where their interest lies.
  • The town of Meeker hopes to reunite a runaway dog with her owner this week, after trying to capture the dog for the past several weeks. A citizen found six puppies under a porch at the edge of town last week, and authorities brought them to the town animal shelter. The owner of the mother dog said he gave the dog to a Meeker family but, he said, the family did not care for the dog, and she ran away.

Rangely Times ~ 50 years ago

  • At the next regular meeting of the Town Council, a decision will be made as to the operation of snowmobiles within Town limits. At their last meeting the Council heard a request from the newly-formed snowmobile club that an ordinance be approved allowing the operation of snowmobiles in the alleys through the town as well as across designated streets.
  • Air Force Captain Mark Danielson, 29, formerly of Rangely, who is missing in action in Southeast Asia, was not listed on any of the lists of POWs released by North Vietnam.

Rangely Times ~ 25 years ago

  • According to Mayor Don Peach, the town of Rangely could be left out of an extended statewide telecommunications project that focuses on rural areas. Peach reported that there are 75 access points throughout the state and the state would make access points available to all the county seats. When the project started, Rangely was not included. Peach explained that the Rio Blanco County Commissioners approached the Moffat County Commissioners about forming a Yampa Valley Telecommunications alliance, which resulted in Rangely being included in the project.
  • On behalf of the Tools for Tomorrow, we are pleased to announce Jodie R. Heath as the local winner representing Rangely High School in the All-American Vocational Awards program. A $100 U.S. Savings Bond will be issued from the U.S. Treasury Department to Jodie.
