Meeker Herald ~ 125 years ago

The year may be young, but that is no excuse for supposing that it needs you as its guardian.

On Thursday evening, the Rev. Handel gave a party to a few of his friends. The occasion was Mr. Handel’s birthday. About 20 persons sat down to an elegant spread. There was no limit to the good things to eat.

The local meteorological conditions gyrated between marked extremes during the past week. Sunday night it was 16 below zero; Monday night 20 below; Tuesday night 21 above; Wednesday 4 above; Thursday night 8 below, and last night 8 below.

District Attorney Frank Delaney came in Thursday to attend to legal matters.

While the electric lights were off for a short time Tuesday night, some miscreants stole 17 or 18 of the light bulbs off the Christmas tree. If the culprits are located it will go hard with them.

The Moffat road has started the winter schedule of tri-weekly service. It has been late from 6 to 11 hours every trip since the schedule started.

With only a little more than $4,000 in the trip fund, the Meeker High School band’s trip to Hawaii is out. Earning $12,000 in the next five months in such a small community is a little too much to ask of 110 band students involved in so many other activities, according to band director Dale Jens.

Darold Arnold, member of the U.S. Army who was home for the holidays, was driven into Denver Tuesday by his father Clifton Arnold. From there Darold took a flight to New York en route to Frankfurt, Germany. Darold has been stationed in Germany for the past 22 months.

Apparently the thought that winter weather is going to be with us for a long time struck home Monday evening at the Town Council meeting. Trustees moved to designate 7th Street as a sledding hill and decided to set up a skating rink down at the swimming pool parking lot. Hats off to Town Council.

The Meeker Recycling Center opened last Saturday to sunny skies and a nice mix of people. Through a barrage of flyers, the recycling committee has been striving to let Meeker citizens and businesses know about the center.

It was organization day for Rio Blanco County on Jan. 11. At 10 am at the courthouse, most of the newly elected county officials took the oath of office, all of them for the last time unless county voters decide to overturn the term limitation law as it applies here before these officials are up again for re-election. Sworn in were county treasurer Joann Findlay; commissioner Kim Cook; county clerk Nancy Amick; assessor Renae Neilson; sheriff Phil Stubblefield; surveyor James Joy; and coroner David Eskelson.

The Meeker wrestling team started the new year with two league victories in front of an excited hometown crowd. The Cowboys defeated the Battle Mountain Huskies before outscoring our county (rivals) neighbors, the Rangely Panthers 54-28.

RANGELY TIMES ~ 50 years ago

Rangely High School has had a bit of excitement this week in the form of two foreign exchange students from Recife, Brazil. They are staying in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Russell Fiddler.

Kathy Dollahite of East Rangely Avenue, Rangely Colorado, recently received a $50 Scholarship from the Rochelle McDermott Memorial Fund. This fund was established in memory of Rochelle McDermott, a native of Steamboat Springs, who worked in the San Francisco area. Mrs. Dollahite, also a R.N. and a young nurse like Rochelle, has received this scholarship to encourage her to pursue the development of her natural artistic abilities.

RANGELY TIMES ~ 25 years ago

The Rangely town council discussed plans to build a railroad through the Rangely area. Lance Stewart voiced his opinion that this could be the most dynamic situation for Rangely in many years, If the proposed railroad were made a reality, it could create 50 to 250 new jobs.

Girl Scout cookies go on sale January 15.
