Smallpox is quite the epidemic in various parts of the state, but as yet there are no cases in Meeker. Rifle, however, is said to be afflicted.
Irons for the new Miller creek bridge were brought in Thursday by Freighter Spurlock.

James Sheridan left mid-week for Los Angeles with a car of fat hogs for market. James got his hogs out just in time to miss the big storm.
Notwithstanding the storm and drifting snows on the Meeker-Rifle road, Thursday the mail was only two hours behind schedule time that day. Storms and snow drifts don’t prevent the Harp Brothers pushing through.
Pioneers, don’t forget the Old Timers dance at Rooney hall, Friday evening, February 1st.

Leaving Tuesday of last week to make their home in San Francisco, California until may, were Mr. and Mrs. Roy Sizemore. Roy has employment there as a welder with Joyce Sheet Metal Company.
Kim Wix, student at the Draughan Business College in Albuquerque, New Mexico, has recently been elected as president of the school’s student council. Kim is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clark Wix.
Barbie Robinson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Robinson, has enrolled at the Fort Lewis College in Durango for the winter semester.

A Meeker High School sophomore was taken into custody on Jan. 13 after he allegedly threatened another student with two fixed-blade hunting-style knives at the school just after classes began.
The Meeker Board of Education asked all the school district employees, and all the citizen accountability committees that advice the schools, to suggest ways to pare down the district’s $290,000 budget deficit next school year. All the groups came back to the school board on Jan. 19 with a resounding recommendation to return to the 4-day school week as the very first thing the district should do.
The Meeker Masonic Lodge is preparing to open their new lodge in the former Food Factory building at 7th and Park streets in Meeker. For more than a century, the Masons have been meeting in the Hugus Building and its predecessor buildings on the corner of Sixth and Main.

RHS’s Future Homemakers of America organization made gifts for the children in the School for the Deaf and Blind in Colorado Springs. They made stuffed animals and sent them to the children for Christmas.
Jack Lee was presented with a Certificate of Appreciation by Colorado Wildlife Division representative Louis Vidakovich for his work with the Hunter Safety classes given here. Presentation was made on Jan. 11.
Captain Clark L. Mobley of the U.S. Air Force visited with his parents, the David Mobleys, last week. He is stationed in Norfolk, Virginia.

Colorado State Parks will offer the First Annual Ice Fishing Contest at Rifle Gap reservoir just north of Rifle on February 6 and 7 from 8 am to 4 pm.
Donald and Ruthell Haycock of Rangely have been called in a two-year mission to Teranaki, New Zealand. This is a Church Education Mission. They will be working with the youth and young adults in Seminary and Institute programs. They will also teach Institute at the University.
Recent surveys of Colorado’s mountain snowpack by the Natural Resources Conservation Service show the state’s snowpack is below average.
