• Ambrose Oldland was out to Denver during the week, partly on business and partly on pleasure.
• Several cases of measles developed in town and vicinity last week, and in order that the disease might not spread school was closed this week.
• The weather in these parts had a kind of Chicago tinge to it, namely: On Monday, 3 inches of beautiful new snow and 12 degrees below zero that night; 28 below Tuesday night; 18 below Wednesday night; 3 below Thursday night and 12 above last. All told, about 6 inches of snow fell in the valley during the week.

• A lot of people who don’t advertise think business is dead.
• Wear a smile — and plenty of clothes.
• There is some involuntary unemployment, of course, but a lot of people are working mighty hard in order to keep out of work.
• The sun is now getting high enough to make itself felt, where the shadows do not interfere. We may have some more snow and frost but the backbone of the winter is broken, as the weather prophets would say.

• Howard D. Cooley, formerly of Grand Junction, is the new officer in charge of the Department of Revenue’s state driver license bureau for Rio Blanco County. The driver license office was formerly under the county clerk and recorder’s office until the system was taken over by the state the third of January.
• The Meeker Jaycees held their annual Distinguished Service Awards Banquet Thursday night at the El Rancho Cafe. Winning awards were Mike Grady, Laura Ackerman, Dale Harthan, Lynn Whiteman, Hal Pearce and Dr. Earl Ryan.

• Cody Crooks, son of Sam and Virginia Love, took first place in the Alice Cunningham Conservation Poster Contest. Jessica Hilkey, daughter of Troy and Rhonda Hilkey, won the second place ribbon. Both students also were state finalists.
• Dr. James Jirak, son of Edwin and Liona Jirak, sang in Carnegie Hall in New York Jan. 19 with the Robert Shaw Chorale.
• Allan and Jeanne Jones have won the outstanding conservationist of the year award from the White River Soil Conservation District.

• Wilson Radio Communications, a two-way service and rental organization, has moved to Rangely.
• Experience is knowing a lot of things you shouldn’t do.
• We learned last week of continuing acts of vandalism here in Rangely that are almost beyond belief.

• With the help of some local pilots and the U.S. Air force, Rangely kids will get a view from the cockpit and training on basic flight principles in the Civil Air Patrol’s Cadet program.
• The hospital will now be offering a Meals on Wheels program to furnish meals to senior citizens, those mentally and physically handicapped, and those recovering from major illnesses or surgery.
