The Meeker Herald ~ 125 years ago

Monday night the court house hall was filled with the biggest crowd ever gathered together at a dance in Meeker, and it put the baseball boys in good shape financially. 

Senator Wolcott has had his stepson Lyman M. Bass, appointed a second lieutenant in the regular army. He is now a ward of the administration, but his salary is not as big as “popper’s” 

Tommy Cassiday won the 100-yard foot race for men Monday. 

At the town council meeting Thursday afternoon it was decided after considerable discussion to remove the trees from the town park.. We fail to see why the park should be sent back to where it was in 1887. A good many  of our citizens have spent lots of money for shade and ornamental trees since that year.

George M. Lord of Yellow Creek was autographed at the Meeker hotel thursday. 

Bert J Bligh, representing the Mergenthaler Linotype Co., in making the White-Yampa river circuit. 

It is announced that the Moffat Tunnel is to start August first. 

Mrs Peter Pearson of the Park, was attending to the business matters in town, Thursday.

An early morning burglary Sunday at the S & S Equipment Co., found thieves getting away with about $400 worth of sporting goods and cash.

For the past two or three weeks, Steve Barley, Kenny Shimko, Jim Randall and Jesse Harris have picked up a large accumulation of trash along the highway, starting from up the river turnoff, to the Stage Coach Inn, 2 miles west of Meeker. 

In between all other activities on July Fourth, the Meeker Fire Department was called in the early afternoon to extinguish a weed fire in the northwest part of town. Fire Chief DeWayne Merriam said he couldn’t find the cause of the fire but believes it to be a loose cigarette.

One of the kid events during the ranch rodeo was something called the suitcase race. Kids run to a suitcase, and put on the adult clothing they find, and run back across the finish line.

The Town of Meeker has decided to sell town hall to the fire department, and move town hall to a new location. 

In Shawn Blankenship’s case, the work consisted of digging out thistle and other noxious weeds at StarbuckStadium in Meeker. Rio Blanco county has one of the worst infestations of noxious weeds in the state, and perhaps in the region. 

Rio Blanco County Sheriff Phil Stubblefeild plants a smooch on a Meeker- area pig while county commissioner Kim Cook holds the pig… The kiss a pig was a fund raising project for the girls 9-13 Fastpitch Softball League. On each jar was the name of a prominent member of the community. Citizens voted by putting money into the jars. The person who had the most money “won” the contest and the right to kiss a pig during the recent fast-pitch tourney in Meeker. 

Rangely Times ~ 50 years ago

A reception was held in the Homemaking room of the highschool on Monday evening from seven to nine honoring two retiring Rangely teachers, Mrs.Lois Drake and Mrs.Dollie Hahn. 

Rangely residents are painfully aware of the water shortage following a day, July 10 when most of the town was out of water.

Saturday, July 14, will be a big day at the Slush Pit, as the Men’s Club will sponsor a Youth Tournament for all boys and girls up through 18 years of age.

Rio Blanco County undersheriff Anthony Mazzola stands by to catch a man who was trying to walk in a straight line while wearing special goggles that mimic the effects of being highly intoxicated. 

Rangely Hurricanes took 21 swimmers to Rifle Stingrays Firecracker Swim Meet and came away with the first place trophy. 

A multi-million dollar natural gas pipeline project will begin this month in Rio Blanco County 25 miles east of Rangely. Questar Big Hole in the Piceance Basin gas line of the TransColorado Pipeline Project, a $200 million, 292 mile pipeline that will provide natural gas for the West Coast.
