Someday this country will grow wise enough to cut presidential campaigns down to a single month, which, in these times of electricity, would be quite enough for the issues to be placed before every voter.

Since the telephone reached Meeker we can get important outside news a day in advance of former times. The phone is a very handy thing in many ways.

A very prominent party came in on Monday’s stage. There are more big capitalists, big railway men and beg professional men in the party than has been seen in these parts since the Prince of Wales and Sir George Gore made their famous fishing trip to South Fork some years ago

Fourth of July celebration a big success — over 3,000 visitors in attendance here. The grandstand was full and cars were parked two and three deep all over the grounds. In the evening the entertainment continued — there were two dances both nights, a miniature railroad for the children, Robinson Brothers circus and the grand display of fireworks.

One evening last week Charley and Bert Henderson were on Main Street well loaded with ‘white mule.’ Deputy Sheriff Walden told them to go home several times but the warning failed to have any effect. They became abusive in their language to such an extent that Mr. Walden deputized two other men and put them in the county jail for the night. Last Saturday, July 4, Lem Gordon drove into town and up in front of the Meeker Garage. When he got out of the car Sheriff Miller stepped up to him and presented a search warrant to search his auto. Lem admitted it contained what the sheriff wanted but asked that he drive around to some other place less public, which the sheriff gladly consented to do. Upon search of the car a gallon and a quart of liquor were found and Lem was placed under arrest. He was arraigned before Judge Wix and fined $100 and costs.

Plans announced this week by Rio Blanco Oil Shale Project officials for the development of the C-a tract 19 miles southeast of Rangely mark the tremendous progress of the developers toward that first plant to produce oil shale. The help offered Rangely officials will be of tremendous value in orderly planning for the hundreds of new residents we must accept within the next few years.

The Brennan family, dad Jim, mother Bev, brothers Neil and Matt along with Emma Vaughn, won the team championship in the annual ranch rodeo during the recent Range Call Celebration.

Slurry bombers worked endlessly with ground crews to battle the fires and the winds that were carrying them south of Rangely on Dragon Trail last week. Jon Hill said the fires got within a mile of his home. He said that, luckily, the winds were blowing away from his house.
