H.H. Leonard’s bay gelding “Little Ruby” won the three-minute Aspen last Sunday in three straight heats, beating W.S. Copeland’s Beauty and Harry Barnes’ “Bonetta.”

Four loads of Bear River cattle got on the Denver market and bought the top prices. When steers from the range being $55 to $60 the cattle business may be considered as excellent.

B.M. Vaughan arrived at his Elk Creek ranch from the east last week, and for a few days this week was visiting Meeker in company with A.C. Ellison.

James McGuffie has opened up a tailoring establishment in the old court house, and is prepared to do cleaning, repairing and general merchant tailoring.

Now’s the season when the weeds on our streets, private property and all vacant lots should be cut, before they (the weeds) go to seed. This is a matter back of which that splendid organization, the Lions Club, should get behind. Make the town look like a city instead of a water-tank village.

About 30 residents of the Lime Kiln section gathered at the home of J.D. Service last Saturday for a surprise for. Mrs Madge Hutchson. The evening was spent in playing games and with music after which a bountiful lunch was served.

“The hardest thing for a man to do is to convince himself that he is wrong.”

Mrs. H.H. Barlett of South Bend, Indiana, was a visitor to Meeker over Sunday last. Mrs. Barlett was the former Georgia Whitmore at one time, a high school teacher here and one of the best we ever had.

Memphis, Tennessee, is about the best represented section of the United States on the Meeker hotel register these days. There were 10 names on the register the other day, all whom claimed this up-to-date southern city was their hometown.

Wednesday, July 25 is the beginning of National Farm Safety Week and a good time for farmers in Rio Blanco County to examine their farming operations to eliminate unsafe practices.

Following 32 years service in the Bernu of Indian affairs agency in Spokane, Washington, Robert T. Crawford was honored by friends and coworkers at a retirement dinner.

For a short while Thursday afternoon, it looked like Meeker was going to be swept off the map as Mother Nature really let loose, dumping .40 of an inch of rain in a short 4-5 minute shower. Drains quickly clogged up around town.

Laurel Covington and Beverly Prater of the County Extension Office, spent last weekend camping out at Flaming George.

Clint Shults from Express Quest prepares to hit one over the fence during one of the Tuesday night Co-ed Rec. District softball games. Robin Joos from first National Bank of the Rockies, gets ready to catch the ball if he misses. First National Bank was an undefeated team until they came across Express Quest who broke their record by beating them 26 to 7.

I think we’re overdue for a progress report on the Meeker Public Library. So far this year, we’ve added almost 1,000 new books to the collection. Approximately half of them replace outdated materials we’ve discarded. The other half is new fiction or new nonfiction on topics previously not in the collection.

STRAIGHTEN YOUR BACK! STRAIGHTEN YOUR LEGS! WALK DOWN THE WALL UPRIGHT! That’s what his fellow firefighters are advising fireman Joe Fennessy to do Monday evening as the meeker Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department practiced rappelling down the 10th Street Bridge.

Ladies of the Sewing Club Circle met July 18 in Jensen at the home of Mrs. Katie Ross for an outdoor luncheon and meeting.

Ken Hayden and son Mark are pictured with the Colorado State Rifle Championship trophy won by the senior Hayden at the state shoot in Leadville where he repeated as State champion. Mark won the Junior State Championship at the Meet. The father-son pair also received individual medals and trophies.

Only one person turned in a petition to be a candidate for a member of the board of the Rangely District Hospital by the deadline last week. Jack Piper turned in a petition for one of the two positions to be filled to legal counsel for the hospital and advised the board that an election was not necessary.

Residents in Rangely may have a place to play thanks to the Foundation for Public Giving. THe foundation approved $750 for the building of two batting cages located on the Rangely High School baseball field.

Since June 1 three Rangely students have been traveling to Vernal, Utah, five nights a week to rehearse the play Trial of Dreams, based on a Mormon trial-captain’s dream.

Rick Ullom, the county Road and Bridge Department Chief, resigned unexpectedly on July 13. No reasons were given.

In August, a former Rangely Water Treatment Plant employee Madison Hall will see sunlight for the first time in months. Since February he and nine others have been working for Colorado Springs based Space Mark at McMurdo Station, Antarctica, and winter is just about to end.
